Today is National Detroit style pizza. Created in 1946 by Buddy’s Rendezvous, these delicious pizzas were made in blue steel automotive drip pans. The cheese drips under the deep dish crust and forms a brown, crispy, cheese crust unlike any other pizza you’ve had. We are sold on this one!!
Here’s how you do it:
Start with the crust. There are a lot of great Detroit pizza crust recipes out there, but I’m lazy (hence the lazy gastronome). I used a premade crust from Trader Joe. It’s easy to work with and delicious. Since I don’t (yet) have a Detroit pizza pan, I used a large glass baking dish.
Spread the crust out on the bottom of the pan,
then cover with a damp towel and let it rise for a couple of hours. (It may not rise a lot)
Next, preheat the oven to 450 degrees, then top the crust with the cubed cheeses.
The sauce goes on in strips. Spread them across the pan, over the cheese in vertical lines.
The pepperoni comes next. I like to use pepperoni “cups”. They curl up and get really crispy around the edges.
Bake for about 15 to 20 minutes. When it’s done the edges will look slightly burned and the top brown and bubbling!
Remove from the oven and allow to cool for about 5 to 10 minutes before cutting.
After some cooling time, cut the pizza into squares and serve.
Check out the bottom,
and the big, fluffy crust –
then take a big, delicious bite!! Yum!

This looks and sounds so good Helen! I love that it bakes in a casserole dish…I must try the Trader Joe’s crust, thank you!
It was so good we don’t want any other kind of pizza again!! Thank for stopping by. And Trader Joe has two crusts (over by the cheeses). The plain one I used here and a garlic herb one that is so good – almost like pizza on breadsticks!!
