National Pizza Day Pizza Sticks

National Pizza Day!

Do you like pizza? Sounds like most people do! The average American eats 23 pounds of it a year! That’s a lot of pizza. And there are so many different ways to make pizza.

Here’s a recipe that makes pizza bread sticks stuffed with all the pizza goodness. Have them as a meal or serve them to your guests as an appetizer – they are easy and delicious!

So pick a recipe, fire up the oven and make some homemade pizza for dinner tomorrow!

Here’s How to Do it:

Start with the sauce.

In a mortar, crush the fennel seed coarsely.

Add the basil and onion powder and give it a quick grind.

Place the tomato sauce, water and bay leaf in a small saucepan. Slowly bring it to a simmer.
Stir in the spice mixture and simmer slowly (on a very low temperature) for 20 to 30 minutes.

Next, prep all the fillings for the pizza sticks – use mine or create your own!

Melt the butter with the garlic and stir in the salt.

Cut the dough into six long strips.

Now – fill each stick.

Carefully pull the sides and the ends over the fillings and pinch together to seal.

Place the filled sticks gently on a parchment lined baking sheet.

After all are filled and on the sheet, brush them all with the butter.

Sprinkle them with the dried parmesan cheese.

Preheat the oven to 325° then bake the strips for about 20 minutes, or until they are golden brown and stiff.

Cut each stick in half.

Serve with the warm sauce to dip in – and enjoy!

Ingredients
Marinara Sauce
  • 8 oz Tomato Sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon fennel seed, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed garlic
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 Tablespoons water
Pizza Sticks
  • 1 pkg refrigerator sheet dough
  • 3 Tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed garlic
  • pinch fine sea salt
  • 1-1/2 cup shredded mozzarella
  • 3/4 cup chopped pepperoni
  • 1/4 cup sliced kalamata olives
  • 1/4-1/2 cup dried parmesan cheese (in the can)
