National Pick Strawberries Day – Strawberry Round Up.

Yesterday was National pick strawberries day. They aren’t really ready here in Oregon, but it won’t be long. I’ve got a few plants in my garden and they are loaded but not ripe. They are, however, ripening in their ruby goodness in other parts of the country so I thought now would be a good time for a round up!

First, here are a few strawberry facts. Did you know they are part of the rose family? Yep – and they are great sources of vitamin C, fiber, potassium, folic acid and they are fat free!! They also have anti-inflammatory properties. Wild strawberries have been a fruit source for centuries, but the big ones we see in the store were first grown in France in the late 1700s. Oh – and these gems are the only fruit with seeds on the outside!
