A wonderful way to end your day – or a Sunday brunch – and just in time for St. Patty’s Day! I love Irish coffee and was happy to see it’s quite easy to make!
Irish coffee has been around since the early 1940s. The story goes that a plane on the West coast of Ireland headed for New York had to turn around due to stormy weather. In an effort to extend hospitality, the head chef at Foynes Point gave passengers coffee with a shot of Irish whiskey. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, the chef said, no, it is Irish coffee!
One of the passengers wrote about the amazing “Gaelic” coffee he had at the airport. Together, he and the owner of the Buena Vista Restaurant in San Francisco experimented to find what this coffee was made of. That was in 1952 – and the first Irish coffee was served in the U.S. in 1954 – and the rest is history.
Ingredients you’ll need for each cup –
- 1 shot of Irish Whiskey (1 ½ oz) – I like Bushmills, but Jameson is another good one. [10]
- 1 Tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 ½ cup strong brewed coffee
- Whipped cream
Making the Coffee –
Place sugar and whiskey in the bottom of a clear coffee mug. Stir until the sugar is dissolved. Add coffee then, gently lay the whipping cream over the top. I used aerosol, but in Ireland they would never use it!! Always hand whipped double cream.
Serve immediately!

A delicious way to end the day, or finish a brunch. Strong coffee with cream and a shot of Irish whiskey.
- 1 Tablespoon brown sugar
- 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee
- 1-1/2 oz Irish Whiskey (1 - shot)
- 1/4 cup Whipped heavy cream

Place sugar and whiskey in the bottom of a clear coffee mug.

Stir until the sugar is dissolved.

Add coffee and top with whipped cream –

Serve immediately!
