Homemade Pizza with a Yeast Crust

Tomorrow is National Pizza Party Day!

Here’s a great recipe to help you celebrate this unofficial holiday that falls on the third Friday of every May. Sadly, in these days of COVID-19 and living in captivity, you can’t have a party. But who says you can’t party with your family? Make this delicious pizza together – make one big pizza [12] like we did, or several small ones that everyone can top the way they like. And if you’re feeling generous, make one for your neighbor and leave it on their porch, ring the doorbell and run! Celebrate the Pizza Pie!

Pizza

Here’s How to Do it:

I recommend you use bread flour. Bread flour has more protein in it and will rise better than all-purpose flour. You can use all-purpose but it might take a little longer to rise.

Also the yeast. I like instant yeast. It makes the dough rise faster which means you get your pizza sooner!

You start with the crust. This recipe is for a good sized, thick crust pie. The first thing you do is to bloom the yeast.

Put the water, sugar and yeast in a bowl and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes. You’ll know it’s ready when you see the yeast starting to foam.

Now, add 3 Tablespoons of the oil and the rest of the ingredients and

mix until you have a soft dough. Add a little more flour if you need to.

Turn the dough ball out onto a pastry cloth or floured bread board and knead until smooth – about 5 minutes.

Return to an oiled bowl and allow to rise for about 30 minutes.

If you don’t use instant yeast you will need to let it rise about and hour or two. It needs to double in bulk.

After the rise, put the pizza stone or pan in the oven and preheat to 450°.

Next, drop the dough onto a sheet of parchment paper.

Using your fingers, push and press from the center out until the dough is the thickness you like.

Make sure to roll the outer edges a little to form a lip.

Brush the dough with olive oil, putting a little extra around the edges.

Spread the sauce and

top it with your favorite toppings.

Using a pizza paddle, lift the pizza (still on the parchment paper) and set it on the hot pan in the oven.

Bake it for 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the thickness of the crust, or until the crust is brown on the sides and the bottom and the cheese is melted.

Again, using the paddle, remove the pizza from the oven and let it rest for about 5 minutes.

Cut it

and garnish with your favorites – like parmesan and pepper flakes! Enjoy!
