The Delaware Bobbie

I’ve been watching a show that travels from state to state creating a plate of food that is iconic for that state. It’s been pretty interesting learning about the agriculture and food history, but they don’t have any recipes and I have no plans to travel the U.S. any time soon. So I got an idea…

Every Friday I’ll be featuring a state (pretty much in the order of which was admitted to the union first) and including my version of one or two of the dishes the state is known for.  To start the State Food Friday –

Delaware

The best sandwich, according to those that have eaten it, is the Thanksgiving inspired sandwich at Capriotti’s – one of it’s signature sandwiches, The Bobbie.

In November of 2009, the Bobbie was voted the Greatest Sandwich in America by AOL.com and it’s surprisingly easy to make. You don’t even have to wait for Thanksgiving!

Here’s How to Do it:

I started by making a roasted turkey dinner on a Sunday. And on Monday we had Bobbies. My husband took this delicious sandwich one step further and dipped it in hot gravy like you would a french dip. He said it was delicious!

Start with the rolls. A good french or sourdough hoagie roll suits the bill. Cut it in half.

On one side, spread some cranberry sauce. On the other, a good slather of mayonnaise.

Top the mayo with some stuffing,

then some turkey and put it all together.

You have Thanksgiving on a bun!

Simple and simply delicious.

Want to go even more Delaware? Serve this sandwich with some vinegar fries (a very popular dish in this state – just douse some fries with malt vinegar and go) and some Dogfish Head beer, brewed in Milton, DE!

And as the folks from the first state in the union like to say, “It’s good being first”.

I LOVE a good Bobbie and my first experience with one was at (Delaware-based) Capriotti’s in Las Vegas. It was always my choice when we went there. This is now one of my leftover nights after Thanksgiving…thanks for sharing one of my favorites!

What a great project! I’ve never been to Delaware and never had a Bobbie, but if I ever visit, I’ll know what to eat. :) Thanks for sharing this.

Thanks Lisa – It’s been fun researching the states and their iconic foods. Some I’ve had, some are just my take on the foods. Thanks for stopping by.

Learning so much on Friday Fiesta. Delaware sandwich to watch for next time we travel.

  5. Helen, I’ve never heard of a Delaware Bobbie, but I’ve been eating turkey-dinner sandwiches all my life–love them–but have never once thought to dip it in gravy! I’ll be sure to do that next time and think of your clever husband! #WhatsForDinner

My dad used to make stuffing sandwiches. I had no idea that someone had made it a Delaware favorite either!! Thanks for stopping by!

  6. This looks like a filling meal, Helen. Sounds yummy, too! Thanks for sharing!

  7. I’m enjoying your going around the states, as you do a food item from each. I’ve never heard of the “bobbie”, but looks like a great idea for Thanksgiving leftovers. Or next year when we do our own turkeys I mentioned receiving in a previous comment. (The two T-Day dinners I am going to, the hosts ae providing Tom Turkey and we provide sides – which will make for enough turkey for 2019…)

    • HelenFern says:

Thanks – I’ve been enjoying doing them. Trying to figure out what the feature for 2020 will be!! So glad you stopped by. Have a great week.

We travel from Northern VA to get a Bobbie!!! Good eats!!!

  9. Jean Comfort says:

A good friend from Delaware introduced us to the Bobby while we were in Las Vegas a few years ago. They are my go to leftover meal after a turkey dinner. Who knew that dressing on a sandwich would taste so good?

My dad used to make those sandwiches the day after thanksgiving every year. I had no idea it was famous! LOL – thanks for stopping by and have a great week.
