It’s been a great year for blueberries. I’ve made bread, frozen some, eaten them until I may turn into one!! And then I remembered Grandma’s Kuchen. Kuchen [7] is the German word for cake and Grandma loved to bake. Breads, cakes and many other treats.
Slathered in fresh blueberries and sugar and served hot and steaming, this treat will surely be as big a hit with your family as with ours!
Here’s How to Do it:
To make this kuchen, start by preheating the oven to 350°.
Next, sift together all the dry ingredients. Put the flour, baking powder, salt and 3/4 cup of sugar into a wire strainer and sift the ingredients into a large bowl, making sure they are all blended together.
Add the shortening (I used butter), milk, vanilla and 1/2 teaspoon of grated lemon peel. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for three minutes.
Add the egg and
continue to beat for 2 more minutes.
Pour the batter into a greased 8X8X2 inch pan.
Gently stir the blueberries with the remaining sugar and lemon peel.
Spread evenly over the top of the kuchen batter.
Bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until it’s lightly browned.
Allow to cool slightly before cutting into squares and serving this kuchen hot and crumbly and delicious!

Grandma loved to bake. This delicious German cake is one of my favorites and it will be one of yours too!

- 1-1/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup softened shortening (or butter)
- 2/3 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1-1/2 teaspoon grated lemon peel
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup fresh blueberries
