Gender Reveal Baby Shower Cake

This post has been contributed –  All opinions are mine alone

I love this new baby shower trend – finding creative ways to announce the baby’s gender [1] to all your friends and family. While it might be fun to spend the night before the shower blowing up a dozen pink or blue balloons for someone else’s entertainment, you could simply recreate your wedding day by having everyone gather at the cake, waiting in anticipation for you to reveal a pink or blue cake!

The trick is to keep them all guessing until the big reveal. Some couples tease everyone’s expectations by offering muffins and mini cake bites [2] decorated in both pink and blue icing to keep everyone guessing. Sometimes, even the parents want to keep themselves guessing until the last minute so they hand the envelope with the gender to a professional baker and have them make the gender reveal cake. Baby shower cakes from Sam’s Club [3] simply make the frosting between layers either pink or blue, so everyone finds out together.

Although it’s fun to find out together, if you want to be the keeper of the suspense,  here’s how you can make your own gender reveal cake.

What you need

You can also use a basic vanilla cake recipe [4] and just add the appropriate food coloring.

How to do it

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Prepare the cake pans by greasing them and lining them with baking parchment.
  2. Cream butter with a wooden spoon until soft and fluffy.
  3. Beat egg in a measuring cup and gradually beat it into the creamed mixture until all is incorporated. If it starts to curdle, beat in 1 teaspoon of flour.
  4. Use a metal spoon to fold the flour gently into the mixture.
  5. If it’s too stiff, you can add 1 teaspoon of water to change the consistency. Add in the correct food coloring. (Alternatively, you could leave the food coloring out of the cake, and use it to only decorate the frosting that will go between the two layers.)
  6. Divide between the 2 cake pans. Bake for 30 minutes until cooked.

Once the cake is out of the oven you can decorate it any way you want. You could use a simple vanilla buttercream frosting [5], or decorate it as you would a cake for any occasion. The whole point is to drive your friends and family crazy by not leaving any hints at all as to the gender of the unborn child.

You could also really tease and decorate your cake with pink and blue frosting. Simply separate what’s left of your vanilla buttercream into two different bowls, add the food coloring, and decorate the cake with some simple designs, like stripes or dots.

Enjoy the build up to the gender reveal!
