The Delaware Bobbie

I’ve been watching a show that travels from state to state creating a plate of food that is iconic for that state. It’s been pretty interesting learning about the agriculture and food history, but they don’t have any recipes and I have no plans to travel the U.S. any time soon. So I got an idea…

Every Friday I’ll be featuring a state (pretty much in the order of which was admitted to the union first) and including my version of one or two of the dishes the state is known for.  To start the State Food Friday –

Delaware

The best sandwich, according to those that have eaten it, is the Thanksgiving inspired sandwich at Capriotti’s – one of it’s signature sandwiches, The Bobbie.

In November of 2009, the Bobbie was voted the Greatest Sandwich in America by AOL.com and it’s surprisingly easy to make. You don’t even have to wait for Thanksgiving!

Here’s How to Do it:

I started by making a roasted turkey dinner on a Sunday. And on Monday we had Bobbies. My husband took this delicious sandwich one step further and dipped it in hot gravy like you would a french dip. He said it was delicious!

Start with the rolls. A good french or sourdough hoagie roll suits the bill. Cut it in half.

On one side, spread some cranberry sauce. On the other, a good slather of mayonnaise.

Top the mayo with some stuffing,

then some turkey and put it all together.

You have Thanksgiving on a bun!

Simple and simply delicious.

Want to go even more Delaware? Serve this sandwich with some vinegar fries (a very popular dish in this state – just douse some fries with malt vinegar and go) and some Dogfish Head beer, brewed in Milton, DE!

And as the folks from the first state in the union like to say, “It’s good being first”.
